Tanks offered by Mascott Equipment are
the result of our relationship with several
manufacturers. Aboverground fuel storage
tanks come in a variety of configurations:

•Horizontal, vertical, rectangular.
•Singlewall or doublewall.
•Single compartment or multi-compartment.

We can supply aboveground storage tanks
for many different applications. Information
below is specific to fuel storage tanks, our
most frequently-requested tank style.

Aboveground tank usage may be restricted
or prohibited in some areas, based on
regulations put forth by the Fire Marshall
or other annointed individual within local
jurisdictions. While the International Fire
Code (IFC) is the guiding force behind
most regulations pertaining to aboveground
tanks, it is important to remember that the
local official(s) have the ultimate control.

Two terms that are prevalent in AST
regulations are fire-resistant and fire-
protected. Briefly, the differences:

Fire-resistant: This tank carries a UL-2080
certification. Tesing involves a two hour
fire test at 2000° F, during which time the
temperature limit is 800° with a maximum
1000° at any one thermocouple. Optional
with this tank style: secondary containment
and vehicle/ballistics impact resistence.

Fire-protected: This style tank has a UL-2085
listing. The same 2000° fire test conducted
but temperature maximums are lowered —
the average temperature limit is a maximum
260° with a 400° maximum at any one
thermocouple. With UL-2085, secondary
containment is required and vehicle/impact
resistance is optional.

Other UL aboveground standards:
UL-80: Steel singlewall, secondarily-
contained or diked-type atmospherically-
vented tanks, 60 to 660 gallon capacity.

UL-142: Steel singlewall, secondarily-
contained or diked-type atmospherically-
vented tanks for non-corrosive, stable
flammable and combutable liquids that
have a specific gravity not exceeding 1.0.

Generally, products complying with a given
UL standard also comply with all of the
standards listed below it. For example,
protected tanks generally meet the
requirements for both fire-resistant tanks
and UL-142 tanks.

All standard require emergency venting of
the primary tank and (if applicable) the
secondary containment to ensure safe
operation of the tank system in the event
of fire.
